A Rancho Grande program offering free stays for children in cancer treatment and their families

Rancho Grande is a 200-acre off-grid guest ranch high in the Ojai mountains, surrounded by the wild beauty of the Los Padres National Forest. We understand the power of stepping away from daily treatments and hospital visits, even for a short time. That’s why we open our doors, at no cost, to children undergoing cancer treatment and to their families. Located just above the town of Ojai, California, Rancho Grande is situated approximately two hours from Los Angeles and one hour from Santa Barbara, making it an easy escape into the mountains while remaining close to major cities.

Families stay in our two-bedroom rustic Cowboy Cabin, with a fully equipped kitchen and cozy living space. The cabin sits right in the heart of the farm where the animals roam, so you can step outside and be greeted by the sights and sounds of ranch life. Guests often describe it as comfortable and peaceful, the perfect mix of adventure and calm—a place that feels like a true home away from home.

During your stay you can feed and mingle with our friendly animals—Albert the camel, our viral star with over 100 million views, along with horses, alpacas, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks and guinea pigs—enjoy a little boating or fishing on the pond, ride electric mountain bikes, or play in the Rock Room with its pool table and piano. Just as important, many families simply savor the peace and quiet: breathing the mountain air, watching the sunset, and finding a welcome change of scenery among many other simple pleasures. And yes, family dogs are welcome too.

This free getaway is intended for children currently undergoing chemotherapy or other active cancer treatment. To help us make sure the program reaches families who truly need a break, we require a recommendation from the child’s treating doctor or oncology care team, confirming that a short visit to the ranch is appropriate. This step protects the child’s safety and ensures their medical team supports the trip.

We believe every child deserves moments of pure joy and wonder, especially while facing serious illness. A visit to the ranch gives families time to reconnect, laugh, and create memories far from medical routines.
